Puppets have a special way of reaching students in a way that a teacher cannot. As colourful fictional characters, puppets have the ability to break down barriers surrounding tough subjects.
The Puppeteaching Project is a program I first launched while on internship with West Africa, in the role of Theatre Director. The theatre group I worked alongside performed street theatre about HIV/AIDS prevention. Via puppets we were able to change our audience from young adults to pupils, performing our shows for 11 local elementary schools.
The Puppeteaching Project's programs range from teaching children about disease prevention, to environmental education, to shedding light on social issues such as bullying. The needs of the community are fully considered when choosing a theme.
